Potumentaries, or Pot Documentaries, are all the rage these days. Fortunately none of them follow in the footsteps of the first ever such film, Reefer Madness. Instead, most of today's marijuana related documentaries are out to shed light on the reality of marijuana's relationship with society. How Weed Won the West takes a good look at how the pot business has been able to plant it's roots firmly in the culture and economics of California.
A large part of the movie focuses on the booming pot growing industry in the "Emerald Triangle", a region in northern California that has become biggest and best home for pot growers. The triangle supports a multi-billion dollar pot economy that is vital to the survival of the economies in the surrounding cities.
Director Kevin Booth takes you on a journey from the growing fields, to the medicinal dispensaries, and from there to the arena of politics and culture. California is at the forefront of the marijuana movement and Booth aims to show it. He also wants to show how much friction is between the old system run by the U.S. federal government and the new popular support for pot being pushed forward by millions of pot lovers.
For a California based stoner like myself there hasn't been a movie about marijuana that tops this one in relevance and accuracy. Alex Jones appears in the movie, delivering punctuating satires and monologues. WWE hottie, Shelly Martinez, also makes an appearance. That might not sit well with some who claim sex is too much a part of the pot movement, but that's a discussion for another time.
