Ozomatli - New Album "Fire Away" 4/20/10
Before we say anything, let's start with Ozomatli's description of their own music,
"You drive down Sunset Boulevard and turn off your stereo and roll down your windows and all the music that comes out of each and every different car, whether it's salsa, cumbia, merengue, or Hip Hop, funk or whatever, it's that crazy blend that's going on between that cacophony of sound is Ozomatli, y'know?"
That quote's from an interview the band did with NPR. The band is named after the Aztec god of dance, fire, the new harvest, and music. Ozomatli's band plays a concoction of latin, rock, hip-hop, and jazz styles of music. The band has seven members, playing a variety of instruments, from guitar to saxophone, and plenty of percussion.
The band's new album, "Fire Away", is set to release on April 20, 2010. The band's going to be playing a number of shows in the United States, but won't get to their home state of California till September. In California they'll be playing at KCRW's world festival on the nineteenth.
Ozomatli's has always been ready to use their music as a platform, and to spotlight injustices. When they first got together it was to play at a labor protest. Since then they've continued to use their tunes to vibrate the strings of issues like Hurricane Katrina and to criticize the actions and motivations of the U.S. government.
