Suicide Girls - Beauty Redefined? - SuicideGirls.Com

The Suicide Girls are all about the beauty and sexuality of thin tattooed women. SuicideGirls.com's self description is "Beautiful naked girls - punk rock girls, emo girls, goth girls tattoo girls". Yeah that's a little weird. Don't get me wrong the art is beautiful, the poses, the expression, the skin, the composition, they have all of what makes nudity art. The title though, gives you the idea that they're marketing a little too much like porn sites do.

Suicide Girls is jumping into cannabis culture by including pot in their newest film. The short section of the film features Suicide Girls Kiefer, Radeo, Rambo, and Lanei showing their joint rolling skills. Of course as the girls grow tired of their clothes, they remove them. All backed with a good beat to boot.

One of the interesting aspects of their site is the profile pages for the models. I got a kick out of the real stuff they're all interested in. Like Thome Yorke, who is the lead singer of Radiohead and a confirmed Coachella Music Festival performer for instance, that's good music. I even heard reference to the legendary "based on real life" book I hope They Serve Beer in Hell.

Suicide Girls considers themselves to be "beauty redefined". While their models express alternative cultures, they don't stray very far from the stereotypical western views of a sexy body type. In fact it's mostly a group of white women with relatively low body fat. That's not bad but it's definitely not new either.

I know it may seem strange that I would have any beef with all this cheesecake, and I really don't. The pictures are beautiful. The women are beautiful, but when you represent such a narrow aspect of beauty you're bound to leave some people out. Logically they can't represent everything, and it is the tradition of art to know your goal. As Picasso chose to show the world it's beauty through cubist and other forms abstract paintings, Suicide Girls has chosen the photography of thin, edgy, and tattooed women.

It's hard to decide whether or not the Suicide Girls photos can be qualified as being "all" art. Sex sells too easily and they don't represent themselves well enough. But it's unfair of us to pass on the sins of a few photographers and/or marketers to the individual photos. They contain the beauty of real women, even if it's just the one's of a certain type.
